Stage
7 – Researching and Analysing Intelligence
This
stage of the investigation is where the police researching and analysing
intelligence that they have collected takes place.
The
intelligence analysts will conduct an overview of crime in the area or of known
individuals in the area the crime/s were committed.
They
look at the current crime trends, such as; car thefts or burglaries in the
locality in order to see if who is committing the crime/s can be identified,
how they commit the crime/s, in what area the crime/s are taking place and the
reason for the crime/s being committed.
The
analysts will produce reports for the police with tactical-short term, specific
goals or strategic-long term overall goals that provide the police with advice
on who and what they need to investigate.
This
is done with a view to linking crimes that may have been a contributing factor
to the crime they are investigating and is be an important part of the
investigation process.
In
the case of Aileen Wuornos this stage of the criminal investigation would have
been essential as there were numerous victims and the use of the aforementioned
systems would have enabled the link to be established.
When
researching and analysing the intelligence, each of the victims would have been
investigated to reveal their life style, any known associates, behavioural
patterns, previous convictions or possible motives for their murder. As the number of victims grew and a pattern
emerged the police would have formed a theory as to the reason for the
murders. This would provide a profile of
who was committing these crimes and why.
Aileen Wuornos was the first woman to fit the Federal Bureau of
Investigations (FBI) profile of a serial killer this was significant as only
males showed the characteristics prior to her.
All of the crimes were committed in one state, Florida.
